Understanding my HbA1c results

Sugar circulating in the bloodstream attaches to hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells. HbA1c reflects the percentage of hemoglobin that has glucose bound to it. The more sugar in the bloodstream over time, the higher the HbA1c level detected.

Normal HbA1c Levels

Most medical organizations agree that a normal HbA1c level is between 4.0% and 5.7% in individuals without diabetes. Levels between 5.7% and 6.4% indicate an increased risk for diabetes (often referred to as prediabetes). A level of 6.5% or higher is used to diagnose diabetes.

For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, HbA1c targets are individualized, but levels below 7% are commonly recommended.

Elevated HbA1c Levels

As with all our tests, we encourage customers to review their results with a healthcare provider. If your HbA1c level is elevated, consider printing a provider copy of your HbA1c Test results to support a more informed discussion about next steps.

Microvascular Complications

Microvascular complications can result from prolonged elevated blood sugar levels and may include damage to the retina in the eyes, kidney disease, nerve damage, and circulation problems.
