How does High Risk HPV cause cancer?

Although the specific mechanisms of how high-risk types of HPV can cause cancer in cells is not completely understood, it is known that the viral DNA inserts itself into the host cell DNA and causes increased replication of the cell which, if left undetected by the host’s immune system, can grow into cancer. It typically takes 10 years or more for an HPV infection to cause cancer.
