How common are HPV associated cancers?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is thought to be responsible for more than 90% of anal and cervical cancers, about 70% of vaginal and vulvar cancers, and more than 60% of penile cancers. Each year in the US, there are approximately 44,000 HPV related cancers: 25,000 in women and 19,000 in men(1). Cervical cancer is the most common HPV related cancer in women with 11,000 cases of cervical cancer annually and approximately 4,000 deaths(2). Oropharyngeal cancers are the most common in men, with almost all of the 17,000 cases being found at the back of the tongue and tonsils(1).
