What is Lyme disease?

First things first, it is called Lyme Disease - not Lyme's Disease!

Lyme disease is spread through the bite of a blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis or Ixodes pacificus) that is infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. While Borrelia burgdorferi was the original organism identified to cause Lyme, it is not the only one.

We test for three bacteria that are known to cause Lyme disease:

Borrelia burgdorferi – found in the USA

Borrelia garinni, and Borellia afzelli – found in Europe and Asia
