Can I take a FIT Colon Cancer Screening Test if I experience bleeding when I go to the bathroom?

Certain conditions or procedures that cause genital or rectal bleeding can lead to false positive results on this test. These may include (but are not limited to):

  • Menstruation
  • Diverticulitis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Recent colonoscopy or polyp removal

If you are experiencing genital or rectal bleeding, you should wait until the bleeding has completely stopped before collecting your sample.

If you notice visible blood in your stool or on the toilet paper when wiping, please contact your doctor right away to discuss next steps.

For menstruating individuals: wait until you have had no vaginal bleeding for at least 3 days before taking your FIT Colon Cancer Screening Test
